 What will not or cannot be delivered via technology and PCs? Buying and selling are established. So, too, even enlightenment and awareness. It might seem far-fetched, but how far are we from touch, taste and smell over the web? In fact there's already a means to convey human touch via the web - well, a form of it anyway. And we live in an age in which the entire 'Encyclopedia Gallactica' is available for an overwhelming number of individuals to browse, on their schedule and at the touch of their hand. That has never, ever been the case in before...




All of the accumulated knowledge - not just of the human race, but of the entire universe for all we know - is available in some form online. (There's some ambiguity around that: turns out it depends on who is looking, and exactly what 'knowledge' they're looking for.)


But up to now computer architecture evolved along a path that made it a "dramatic dialog" to use. HAL would have been a step in the right direction, and provides some fodder for the question, What if technology became an agent for the masses, instead of a taskmaster and a chore to operate?


Wouldn't it be great if a human could, for example, tell Sally, their computer, that they're interested in these certain things and she could just deliver those things! If she could just say, "Good morning. Your bank balance is x, and today the forecast is x and - for your information - there appears to be some congestion on Moreland Avenue, you might try Glenwood Avenue instead this morning. I'm watching the reports, and I'll let you know if that changes before you leave. And remember, your mom's birthday is tomorrow - shall I send a reminder to you later today?"


So, really: Is that asking too much? A machine that's not only OPTIMIZED, but acts with all of the intelligence that it has access to? And it's not that far out - after all, it's not like the computer DOESN'T KNOW. It does. And that's another thing: it knows because I have to TYPE IT IN. What's up with that? It's the 21st century, and is that really the best we can do - STILL: write a program that responds by sending electronic pulses to a flat panel, from a server 2500 miles away, through an unimaginably complex network everyone takes for granted - but it can't just say, "Ok. Got it!" and then act on that.


We're becoming less and less disconnected. Someday we'll become more connected.


Okay. That's all well-and-good to dream and rant, but for now, it's really important NOT TO BE WASTING TIME AND EFFORT fighting with our PC.
